How to properly store artwork

The art you love and cherish should be treated with the same care as a prized possession. You wouldn’t leave your car in the hot sun for weeks without taking it in for regular oil changes, would you? No! Then why would you do that to your treasured work of art? The answer is simple: You wouldn’t. But if you don’t have a storage unit yet, finding a place to safely keep your artwork can be tricky.

This guide will walk through everything you need to know about storing things like paintings, sculptures, and other valuables in self-storage units so they can be protected from harmful elements like sunlight or moisture damage as well as pests such as mice or bugs.

  • Uncover large paintings, especially canvases, and use archival plastic sheets to cover them adequately.

When storing large paintings, such as canvases, it is important to use archival plastic sheets to cover them properly.

Once your canvas has been covered in protective plastic sheets (and secured), place it in its storage container or box with other art pieces if applicable—you want all items in contact with one another supported by their own individual supports!

  • Store flat pieces of artwork between 1⁄2” (1 cm) to 1” (2 cm) off the floor of your self-storage unit using pallets or skids.

If you want to store flat pieces of artwork between 1⁄2” (1 cm) to 1” (2 cm) off the floor of your self-storage unit using pallets or skids, use non-slip material under them.

  • Have a floor plan drawn up to guide you in placing them correctly

If you have many pieces of art to move into your self-storage unit, it will be helpful if you have a floor plan drawn up to guide you in placing them correctly for the best protection inside your storage space.

Don’t stack them on top of each other. Instead, place them end-to-end so that they are not touching each other or any other objects in your unit. This will help protect against moisture damage and mould growth due to excess humidity caused by condensation buildup inside the walls of the self-storage units.

Protect your valuables by storing them properly.

The best way to protect your valuables from damage is to store them in a temperature-controlled, dry, dust-free environment. We hope this guide has been helpful. If you have any questions or comments, please contact us! We’re always happy to help.
